Blackpool’s nightlife is taking safety to the next level with the launch of the town’s ‘Safe Space’ initiative.
Designed to complement the widely supported Pubwatch scheme, this new facility offers essential support to anyone needing assistance during a night out. From offering a safe refuge to helping people get home securely, the initiative is another step in making Blackpool’s night-time economy safer and more welcoming.
Blackpool & Fylde Pubwatch, which has around 180 members, plays a key role in promoting safety by working with licensees, police, trading standards, and other agencies. The scheme helps create a safer drinking environment by monitoring anti-social or potentially criminal behaviour and sending real-time alerts to other members.
Pubwatch has supported a number of initiatives to make the town a safer place, including the ‘Ask Angela’ campaign, ‘Green Dot Bystander’ training, and a recently launched campaign raising awareness about spiking and preventive measures.
The new ‘Safe Space’ facility, located at the reception of ‘The Place – for Skills and Work’ on 1 Clifton Street, offers a secure refuge for people in need of assistance on Saturday nights between 10 pm and 3 am.
Safe Space flags will guide people to the building, where they can recharge their phones, recuperate, or receive support for minor injuries. The project also provides access to a safer taxi scheme, helping people get home safely in accredited taxis.
Together, these two schemes represent a significant step forward in Blackpool’s efforts to provide support, promote safety, and enhance the overall experience of residents and visitors enjoying the town’s nightlife.
